Acclaimed mural artist Jorge Luis Somarriba was commissioned in 2001 to create a mural on a wall in the Amherst Square Apartment complex that had been the site of recurring gang graffiti. Coordinated by the Montgomery Housing Partnership and funded by a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), the project allowed Somarriba to work with 10 young residents of the community (paid an honorarium of $6/hour) to design and paint the 45’ x 8’ mural, enlivening the area and providing a meaningful experience for the youth who participated.
