“Dry Oases” explores the longstanding prohibitions of alcohol in Kensington, Damascus, and Takoma Park, which lasted for more than half a century after the repeal of national Prohibition in 1933. - The talk will focus on Kensington, and explain why Kensington was designated as a “permanently” dry town in 1933; why it stayed that way until the 21st century; and the factors behind the change. - Ranjit S. Dighe, PhD, is Professor of Economics at the State University of New York at Oswego. He has done extensive research on the Great Depression and Prohibition, and has published articles in Research in Economic History, Essays in Economic and Business History, Social History of Alcohol and Drugs, and other journals. Dr. Dighe grew up in this area, and visits the area several times a year.
